De Quervain’s tendinopathy – often referred to as “mum thumb” is a condition that causes pain and swelling in the tendons at the base of your thumb and wrist. The swelling of the wrist and thumb tendons become irritated due to hormonal changes, overuse, repetitive movements such as gripping and lifting. This is also why it’s commonly seen in women after delivery as the tasks of holding their baby and domestic/parent duties increase.
How can we help?
A women’s health physiotherapist can guide you through the recovery process with the following:
- Assessment and Diagnosis: We will evaluate your symptoms and confirm if De Quervain’s is the cause of your pain, or if the source of pain is coming from a different hand/wrist diagnosis
- Pain Relief: We can teach you how to manage pain through techniques like ice application, activity modifications with carrying and feeding baby. We can also fit you with a brace if needed.
- Exercise: We will provide specific exercises to improve the mobility and strength of your wrist and forearm muscles. We will also assist with assessing your lifting technique and postures; from here, additional exercises can be prescribed to address your shoulders, core and upper back to avoid the re-occurrence of it
- Education: You’ll learn how to perform daily tasks safely and avoid movements that could trigger pain.
De Quervain’s can be painful, even disabiling if not addressed well. This is a common condition we see and we can help you get on top of managing this pain so you can go back to your daily tasks without further irritating your wrist.
