Hunner lesion disease refers to someone that is experiencing the symptoms of bladder pain/interstitial cystitis and is also shown to have lesions within the bladder wall upon investigations.
Often individuals with bladder pain will also have a high tone pelvic floor because of their condition.
How can Physiotherapy help these symptoms?
Treatment for bladder pain syndrome/ interstitial cystitis and/or hunner lesion disease may include the following:
- Education regarding prognosis and treatment options
- Education regarding good bladder habits to avoid exacerbating symptoms
- Education regarding appropriate fluid intake
- Education regarding foods or drinks that may also affect symptoms
- Pelvic floor assessment
- Pelvic floor relaxation exercises
- Stretches for the muscles around the pelvis
- Diaphragmatic breathing to assist pelvic floor relaxation
Are there any other treatment options?
Patients that are experiencing bladder pain often require multimodal treatment. This means that as well as Physiotherapy you may be referred to a urologist and/or pain specialist to assist with managing your symptoms. These specialists can prescribe medications as appropriate and outline further treatment options.
