As many women know menopause can cause an array of symptoms due to declining hormone levels! This can include hot flushes, sleeping troubles and changes in mood as well as vaginal symptoms. To assist in relieving the symptoms associated with menopause women can take hormone replacement therapy!
What is topical oestrogen?
A topical or local oestrogen is oestrogen medication that can be inserted vaginally as a tablet or in cream form. A local oestrogen will affect the vaginal tissue, however, has minimal spread to the rest of your body!
How can it help me?
Topical oestrogen can help with reducing tissue dryness and irritation around the vagina. In addition, it has also been found to help with urinary incontinence and symptoms of bladder urgency!
Will other forms of hormone replacement therapy help?
Unfortunately, systemic hormone replacement therapy which can be taken in oral tablet form or applied to the skin in gel or patch form will not help vaginal symptoms.
How do I know if local oestrogen is suitable for me?
If you are postmenopausal and experiencing vaginal dryness, bladder urgency and/or urinary incontinence you can discuss your concerns with your physiotherapist and doctor to see if these medications are suitable for you!
