What is PCOS?
To understand PCOS, you first have to understand that the ovaries have the role of producing and storing eggs, as well as making reproductive hormones. PCOS is a hormonal condition where there’s an imbalance of hormone production levels to the reproductive hormones – estrogen, progesterone, and androgens (“male-type hormones”).
The cause of PCOS is still unknown, but the current understanding is that multiple factors are often at play. This includes genetics, insulin resistance and hormonal imbalance – usually finding elevated levels of androgens. Currently the data says that PCOS affects 1 in 10 women.
What are the symptoms?
Common symptoms are:
-
Irregular menstrual cycles or loss of period
-
Excessive facial and/or body hair
-
Weight gain
-
Acne
-
Fatigue / changes in energy levels
I might have PCOS, what do I do?
First steps would be to have your GP and a pelvic physiotherapist on your treating team. It’s important to know that there is no cure for PCOS, so treatment is focused on management of symptoms.
As pelvic physiotherapists, we will be able to help through:
-
Exercise prescription for insulin sensitivity and/or weight management
-
Advice and education on modifiable lifestyle factors
-
Address any pelvic floor concerns
-
Work together with your GP and refer onto endocrinologists if needed
